The battle was fought on 27 July 1689 at the Pass of Killiecrankie. The Jacobites won but lost about a third of their force, and Dundee was killed. The story ties his death to his part in the killing of the Covenanter John Brown of Priesthill. Other tellings describe the visitor only as a man with blood pouring from his head. No contemporary account of the apparition is cited in the sources we found.
