Crichton Castle is a ruin near the River Tyne in Midlothian, with an Italianate north range built in the 1580s. It was the home of Sir William Crichton, Lord Chancellor of Scotland, who Wikipedia says helped organise the Black Dinner of 1440. The ghost list records the horseman without a story, witness or date.
The detail of the walled up gate is typical of this kind of tale, in which a ghost keeps to a route that no longer exists. The castle is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. A related tale that Sir William Crichton himself walks the site is mentioned in some popular summaries but is not confirmed in the sources checked for this entry.
