The Green Lady of the Old Causeway

Old Causeway street, Cromarty

Traditional; told by Miller in 1835

The green lady is one of the commonest Scottish ghost types, and Miller's remark about shrouds is a piece of folklore scholarship: an older kind of apparition was dressed in green, and the later kind in white grave clothes. He is tracing how ghosts changed with burial customs. The house is not identified.

The other house on the street, on the western side, had a brownie. See that record.
