Sir Alexander Ramsay's Ghost at Dalhousie

Dalhousie Castle, near Bonnyrigg

1342; reports undated

The Haunted Places listing says the two main ghosts of Dalhousie are Lady Catherine and Alexander Ramsay, who was imprisoned and left to starve and survived two weeks eating bits of grain that fell through the cracks. The Celtic Castles article says Sir Alexander Ramsay was reportedly starved to death in 1342 by the castle's then owner, William Douglas, and that his apparition is seen wandering the grounds.

History tells a related but different story. Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie, a Scottish commander in the wars with England, was imprisoned by William Douglas and died at Hermitage Castle in the Borders in 1342, according to the tradition attached to that castle. The haunting at Dalhousie is therefore a tale attached to his family seat, not the place he died.

Dalhousie Castle is a hotel.
