The Grey Lady of Dalhousie Castle

Also known as: Lady Catherine

Dalhousie Castle, near Bonnyrigg

Story set c. 1500; reports modern

The hotel's own history page says Lady Catherine was a mistress of one of the Ramsay lairds, locked up in one of the castle turrets and left to perish by his vengeful wife around 1500. A separate account on the Celtic Castles site describes her as a sixteen year old and says she is called the Grey Lady because of her dress. It says she taps on doors and shoulders and has been seen sitting at the end of a bed, and that a steward remarked she does not like bagpipe music.

The castle itself dates in part to the 15th century, held by the Ramsay family for over eight centuries until it was sold in 1977, according to Wikipedia. It became a hotel in 1972 and now holds ghost tours. The story of the lady is a tradition without a historical source, and the hotel has an obvious interest in the tale.

Dalhousie Castle is a hotel; ghost tours run by arrangement.
