Witchcraft

Margaret Muirhead, First Name in the 1628 Hunt

Presbytery of Dalkeith

Autumn 1628

According to the thesis, a trial commission was issued on 11 November 1628 for Muirhead with Janet Unes, Janet Smibert, Margaret Barrowman, Marion Shearer, Elspeth Duncan, Malie Turner and William Watt. She was accused by nobody else in the hunt and instead was the first to name others, among them William Davidson of Saltoun. The thesis says all were convicted and executed after confessing.

Muirhead is a typical example of the vagrants who supplied names in the Scottish hunts, since people without fixed homes were both easy to arrest and unlikely to be believed. The location is Dalkeith presbytery and the pin is approximate.
