Torquay Museum at 529 Babbacombe Road dates from 1874. Its displays include the Agatha Christie gallery, material from Kents Cavern and a reconstructed Devon farmhouse of the 1860s. It also runs paranormal investigations, including evening and overnight events.
The case that put it on the paranormal map is a photograph taken in the farmhouse reconstruction which seems to show a young woman in Victorian period clothing. The picture has been widely shared online, although the account used here does not say who took it or when.
Other reports include small fingerprints said to have formed on the inside of the case holding the mummified body of a child, a case reportedly not opened for a decade, and a poltergeist said to throw books, leaflets and souvenirs around the museum shop, leaving staff to tidy up before opening. Staff and visitors have also reported an apparition that disappeared through a bookcase in the library, heavy footsteps following people, and the feeling of being watched.
The source is a single magazine article by a writer who accepts the claims at face value and says no one has worked out who the ghosts were in life. Treat it as a reported modern haunting.
