Merlin, Arthur and Hoel at Dumbarton Rock

Dumbarton Rock (Alt Clut)

Medieval and later legend

Dumbarton's claim to Arthurian legend rests on its early medieval role as Alt Clut, a northern British stronghold. The Merlin tradition is a piece of medieval tradition and not a documented event. The Wallace details are attachments of a later date to a fortress with a long history.

The rock is a volcanic plug about 240 feet high and is open to the public at set times.
