According to local folklore reported by Spirited Isle, the Maguire family once asked a young stable hand to injure one of an opponent's horses so that it would be unfit to race. The lad refused and was murdered for it. His body was hurriedly buried under a flagstone in the stable yard.
Roughly three hundred years later, when the property belonged to the Langham family, the remains were found. The story says that, for reasons the page itself calls unfathomable, the skull was brought into the house, and a run of disturbances followed: odd sounds and objects moved by themselves. When the skull was later reburied in the garden the trouble eased somewhat, but the young man's ghost was still said to be seen about the property, and animals were said to panic if left too long in the stable.
No source is named. A brought-in skull that causes a haunting is an old pattern in British and Irish ghost lore, and it is probably best read as a tradition of the house.
