The Wraith at Fort George

Ramparts of Fort George, Ardersier

Printed September 1936; set before 1914

The family wraith comes from a legend about a bride who drowned in a loch, her silk veil wrapping round her husband's shoulders. Historic Environment Scotland, which published the story again as a Christmas ghost tale, says the account is framed as fact but the narrator doubts it at the end, noting that no one remembered Spence. Kirk also wrote Stories of Second Sight in a Highland Regiment.

It is therefore best treated as a published tale with uncertain status, and not as a record of a real event.

Fort George is a Historic Environment Scotland site that is still an army barracks; the public areas have paid entry.
