The Caves Beneath Hawthornden

Hawthornden Castle caves, near Roslin

Tradition; undated

Hawthornden Castle is a 15th century ruin with a 17th century house, extended around 1638 by the poet William Drummond. It has been a literary retreat for writers since the 1980s, when Drue Heinz bought it. The caves are part of the site and Wikipedia gives the Bruce, Ramsay and Wallace associations as local tradition.

Wallace and Bruce caves are found across Scotland and are usually a sign of how those national heroes were remembered, not of recorded stays. This is a folklore record. The castle is a private writers' retreat.

Hawthornden is a private writers' retreat; the caves are not generally open.
