The Brown-Cloaked Monk of Herm's Valley

Also known as: The monk at the Farm Cottages window

The valley path and Farm Cottages between Herm Harbour and Manor Village

Undated modern reports

Herm is barely a mile and a half long, and the path from the harbour up to the manor village is the island's main route. The monk in the brown cloak is seen on it, walking or standing, and never seems to do much. The more unusual detail is the feeling of a hand at the back, walkers reporting that they felt gently steered or pushed on up the slope.

The Farm Cottages sighting is a classic bedroom apparition. A woman living there woke in the night and saw someone sitting by the window on a low stool, in a monk's habit, looking out towards the sea. She turned to wake her husband, and when they both looked the figure was gone.

Both reports come from PIGS's collection of Herm sightings, without names or dates. They are part of a cluster of monk stories that also includes the kneeling figure in St Tugual's Chapel and the monk on the hotel lawn. The map point is placed approximately on the path between the harbour and the manor.

The path is open to walkers; the Farm Cottages are holiday lets.
