The Monk's Bar Ghost, White House Hotel, Herm

Also known as: Pierre du Pont

White House Hotel, Herm Harbour

Reports 2010

Herm's ghost stories lean heavily on monks, probably because the island had a small religious community in the Middle Ages and still has the medieval chapel of St Tugual. The hotel's bar is even called the Monk's Bar. The 2010 ghost hunt, run over two nights by a local group, took the hotel as its base, and one guest claimed the dark figure crossing the lounge was caught on camera.

The dog story is more personal. Jenny Wood and three friends were sitting in the Monk's Bar when a dog with them became distressed. Its head turned and its eyes followed something moving across the room that none of the people could see. The corridor incident involved three children in August 2010 who heard their own words mimicked back to them.

The most colourful claim is the least supported. A clairvoyant staying at the hotel said she had spoken with a monk on the lawn who gave his name as Pierre du Pont, an eleventh-century resident of Herm who had been burned at the stake after a massacre on the island. PIGS notes plainly that "there is no historical evidence for this" and calls it a local legend. Herm Island itself runs ghost tours built on these stories. The records here come from one group's collection and are tagged as single reports.

The White House Hotel is open to guests and visitors; Herm is reached by ferry from St Peter Port.
