The bearded sailor of the Wight Mouse Inn

Also known as: The Clarendon Hotel ghost

Wight Mouse Inn (Clarendon Hotel), Chale

Wreck October 1836; sightings undated

The merchant ship Clarendon sailing from St Kitts, was caught in severe weather and ran aground broadside on the south-west beach at about 6 am in October 1836. Haunted Hosts counts 25 victims.

Haunted Hosts says the inn took its former name from the wreck, that timbers from the Clarendon are part of the building, and that guests have seen a weathered mariner in 19th century clothes on the top landing who ignores them. It also reports heavy boots on wooden floors when the upper floors are empty, objects that disappear and reappear, and more activity in storms.

The wreck is well documented; the haunting is only reported on the hotel directory and listing sites, with no named witness. Other sources give 1835 for the wreck, but 1836 is the date used by Haunted Hosts.
