The Crying Child of Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe

Reported modern; no date

The website Great Castles says that a child was locked away in a room high in the castle at some stage in its long history and that visitors hear a pitiful ghostly voice. It says why or what fate befell the child is not known. Visit Loch Awe describes it as the voice of an unidentified child echoing through the ruins.

Kilchurn was built by Sir Colin Campbell in the 1440s and was abandoned in the eighteenth century after a lightning strike and the move of the Breadalbane family. As a ghost it is an echo of a general tradition and I found nothing earlier than Jones.

Kilchurn is a ruin managed by Historic Environment Scotland; reached by path or boat in season.
