The Lesmahagow Witch Cases before Lanark Presbytery

Lesmahagow

26 June 1623; 27 January 1647

Wayburn or waybread is the old name for plantain, a common healing herb, and Smythe's case shows how a herbal poultice combined with prayer could be read by a kirk court as charming. The database refers to a printed account of the presbytery records and to William Hunter's book on Biggar and the House of Fleming, and notes that the project did not check that secondary reference itself. The name is given as Bessie Smythe here, although the search index lists it as Elizabeth Smith.
