MacGregor wrote that natives of Loch Rannoch-side had witnessed the light only a few years before he wrote, which puts it around the 1930s, but he names no witnesses. Ball-like lights over water are a common item in Highland collections, and the account is a folklorist's summary rather than an investigation.
