The soldier in the cellar of The Hussar, Hounslow

The Hussar, Hounslow

Legend undated; bones reported 1933

Hounslow was a garrison town, and the Spooky Isles list ends with The Hussar. The ghost there is said to be a soldier caught cheating at cards, who was thrown into the cellar by his colleagues when they discovered it and locked in. He was never released and died there.

When the pub was rebuilt in 1933, the article says, the bones and clothing of a soldier were found in the cellar and reburied in St Leonard's churchyard. That has not settled the spirit, which is often heard calling and banging on the new cellar door.

The 1933 discovery is the checkable detail here, but the article does not cite a newspaper or burial record for it. Tagged traditional, with the pin set to the town centre because the pub's address was not confirmed.
