The Nine Monks of Mahee Island

Nendrum Monastery (Mahee Abbey), Mahee Island, Strangford Lough

Undated; the monastery dates from the 5th century onward

Nendrum, also called Mahee Abbey, stands on Mahee Island in Strangford Lough, reached by a causeway. It is one of the oldest church sites in Ireland, traditionally founded in the 5th century by St Mochaoi, and was a centre of learning and prayer.

Today it is also known for hauntings. Locals and visitors report shadowy figures in robes drifting silently through the grounds, a heavy atmosphere that descends without warning and a feeling of being watched. According to legend up to nine spirits haunt the island, the restless shades of monks disturbed after sacred relics were removed from the site in later centuries. In this telling the monks had given their lives to quiet service and, when their holy objects were taken, were left trapped between this world and the next, a silent protest for the sacred harmony they once knew.

State care monument on a tidal-causeway island; open to visitors.
