In his words the sea between Black Island, Priest Island and the mouth of Little Loch Broom was choke full of great ships, men-of-war. Boats full of scarlet-coated soldiers rowed towards Mellon Udrigil and the redcoats landed on the rocks, so near that individual soldiers could be made out. Mrs Morrison of Mellon Udrigil House buried her valuables in the sand, and girls at the shielings on the Greenstone Point retreated to the highest tops.
No soldiers came, and the whole was a vision. Dixon compares it with phantom armies seen on Saddleback in Cumberland and suggests a mirage, but says the evidence that people really saw it is strong.
