He said he had received both from the fairies. He later emigrated to America, was living in Chicago when Dixon wrote, and had won many pipe prizes at competitions there. His nephews, three young Macleans still at Ormiscaig, were all good pipers.
Dixon adds that similar stories are told elsewhere in the north-west Highlands, and that the fairy gift is always a chanter along with the skill to play it.
