The Man in the Chimney at Parc Howard

Parc Howard Museum, Llanelli

Parc Howard is an Italianate mansion set in a public park on the north side of Llanelli. It was built in the 1880s as Bryncaerau Castle and given to the town in 1912 by Sir Stafford Howard and his wife, and it is now a museum of local history and Llanelli pottery. During the First World War it served as a hospital.

The listing site HauntedPlaces.org gives it three ghosts. A nurse and a soldier have been seen and heard, which sits naturally with the house's wartime use. The third story is odder: a man who, to avoid being caught with one of the maids, hid in a chimney, got stuck, and died there, and who is thought to be still in the house.

None of these reports carries a name, date or witness in the source. The chimney tale in particular has the look of a comic legend. They are included as thin reports attached to a well known public building.

Parc Howard Museum and its park are open to the public free of charge.
