The ghost most often reported is Lord Penrhyn himself. Witnesses describe a tall, slim man with high cheekbones and a beard, wearing a dark jacket, striped trousers and a high-collared shirt with a kind of ruffled cravat. He is seen outside what was his sitting room and in the bedrooms of the keep, often holding books or papers, and people remark on how pale his hands are.
Lady Alice Douglas-Pennant, born in 1863, lived at the castle, painted, and never married. Staff found writing in Italian in her bedroom that translates as "to be loved, whilst loving", and the story grew that she had fallen for a member of staff. A slim figure with an hourglass waist, as if tightly corseted, has been reported at the top of the Grand Staircase and is taken to be her.
The castle stables house an industrial railway museum, and it has its own stories. A psychic said she saw a man in authoritative dress, with a top hat and a jacket with shiny buttons, in the Dinorwic Quarry saloon carriage, and a volunteer reported seeing a figure through the carriage windows. A railway engineer named Dafydd described a small dark-haired boy running near the Charles locomotive who vanished into the wall. The blog also mentions "John the Bottler" in the cellars under the drawing room, part of the original medieval house.
