The Wee White Wuman of Queen's Wall

Bog Road and Queen's Wall, near Portavogie

Before the Second World War; lorry driver encounter undated

Before Portavogie was developed it was known for its springs and dry-stone walls. One stretch, the Queen's Wall, gained a reputation for being haunted. The story goes that before the Second World War a woman became lost in heavy snow near the Bog Road and died. Afterwards people spoke of 'the wee white wuman of Queen's Wall', and said they saw her or felt her presence along that stretch, especially in fog or poor light.

One account tells of a lorry driver returning to Ardglass with fish from the Portavogie auctions on a foggy night. This was before the ferry ran, so drivers went round via Newtownards and the Bog Road. His vehicle struck something and he got out to look. Then he felt icy hands pressing on the back of his neck. He spun round and found nobody there, climbed back into the lorry, drove home and never took the Bog Road again.
