The Lost Piper in the Rutherglen Tunnel

Rutherglen

Tradition, undated

The lost piper in an underground passage is one of the best-known Scottish folk motifs, told of tunnels in Edinburgh, Culross and elsewhere, and the pipes heard underground are the standard ending. Here the ground above is the Glasgow Dalmarnock area, which lies outside South Lanarkshire, so the record is pinned to Rutherglen where the tunnel is said to have begun. There is no evidence of any tunnel.
