Jack Jones of South Stack

Also known as: South Stack lighthouse ghost

South Stack Lighthouse, Ynys Lawd, Holy Island

25 October 1853

On the night of 25 October 1853 one of the worst storms anyone could remember hit the Holy Island coast. Jack Jones, one of the keepers, made his way down the cliff path and across the bridge to the lighthouse. As he crossed, a loose rock fell from above and struck him on the head. He was found the next day lying outside the lighthouse door, and died of his injuries some two weeks later.

Keepers and visitors since have described knocking on the doors and tapping at the windows at night, heavy footsteps, doors rattling, and, in the more dramatic accounts, screams. The knocking is the part always linked to Jack, as if he were still trying to get in out of the storm.

When the Most Haunted team filmed at South Stack, presenter Yvette Fielding reported having an object thrown at her, which added to the lighthouse's reputation as a supernatural hotspot.

Seasonal tours are run by the local authority; the 400 steps are steep and the bridge closes in high winds.
