The Lady Walled Up in Strathaven Castle

Strathaven Castle (Avondale Castle), Strathaven

Tradition, undated; bones reportedly found mid-19th century

Walled-up wives are a familiar figure in Scottish and English castle legends, and the bones in the fallen wall are the only physical detail offered here. The claim comes from Wikipedia and a tourism listing, and neither names its authority, so the find cannot be checked. The castle has been closed to the public for several years, and a Friends of Strathaven Castle group formed in February 2023 to press for repairs and reopening.

The site sits a short walk from the town centre, and the local information board is also said to record a tradition of tunnels running from the castle to other spots in Strathaven, which is a separate and equally unverified story.

The castle is reported as closed to the public for repairs. Check locally before travelling.
