Tredegar is proud of its hospital. The town's Workmen's Medical Aid Society, funded by weekly contributions from miners and steelworkers, provided health care free at the point of use long before 1948, and Aneurin Bevan, born in Tredegar, is said to have taken it as his model for the National Health Service.
The General Hospital on Park Row was part of that story. According to the Great British Ghost Tour, it also had a ghost: a nun with a hooked nose, seen on the wards. Many hospital ghosts are omens of death. This one was the reverse. Patients who saw her were believed to be on the road to recovery.
No dates or names are given. The hospital closed after the new Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan opened in Ebbw Vale in October 2010.
