Lights and Battle Cries at Benburb

Benburb, on the River Blackwater

Battle 1646; undated modern reports

The Battle of Benburb was fought in 1646 during the Irish Confederate Wars, when forces under Owen Roe O'Neill defeated a Scottish Covenanter army near the River Blackwater in County Tyrone. Spirited Isle says that although heavily outnumbered, O'Neill used the landscape well, and more than 3,000 of the enemy were killed or captured.

In the centuries since, the battlefield is said to have acquired a spectral reputation. Locals speak of strange flickering lights drifting across the ground, ghostly shapes hovering in the dark, and the echo of battle cries and clashing steel carried on the night wind. Many, the entry says, believe these are the restless spirits of those who fell, replaying the fight.

The listing gives no witness names, dates or specific field. It reads as a general reputation, in the same vein as other battle-site tales, and has not been checked against any local collection.
