Marching Soldiers on the Yellow Ford Battlefield

Mullanary Road area, near Blackwatertown, on the River Blackwater

Battle 1598; undated modern reports

The Battle of the Yellow Ford was fought on 14 August 1598 beside the River Blackwater in County Armagh, when Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, ambushed an advancing English army. The English suffered a heavy defeat, with losses of more than 2,000 men given by Spirited Isle, one of the worst reverses the Crown suffered in Ireland.

Spirited Isle says the area has a reputation for hauntings. Local accounts describe ghostly soldiers on the banks of the Blackwater at dawn and dusk, the clash of swords, cries of pain and marching feet heard faintly through early morning mist, always heard and never seen at source. Dense fog often settles on the valley, and passers-by describe a heavy sense of being watched.

The listing offers no named witnesses and no dates, and treats the sounds as a kind of residual replay of the battle. That is an interpretation, not evidence.
