The Drowned Boy and the Hidden Stairs at Killymoon Castle

Killymoon Castle, Killymoon Road, Cookstown

Undated

The original Killymoon Castle was built in 1671 and burned in 1801. It was rebuilt in 1803 on a larger scale to a design by the architect John Nash, and stands above the Ballinderry River near Cookstown.

Spirited Isle says the grounds are reportedly haunted by the ghost of a young boy who drowned in the lake. It also records the memory of a former resident who, as a child, would hear ghostly footsteps going up and down a staircase. The then owner was not aware that such a staircase existed until they were shown a long-concealed door leading to a hidden set of stairs.

The second story has an unusually concrete detail, the hidden stair, which could have been checked, but the entry does not say when or who. Both stories appear nowhere else in the sources found for this record.
