The Red Torch on the Seven Mile Straight

Seven Mile Straight Road, Antrim

Undated

The long stretch known as the Seven Mile Straight near Antrim has a reputation among motorists. According to folklore circulating in Belfast and Antrim, some drivers claim to have seen the figure of a young policeman at the roadside, holding a red torch aloft and waving as if urging speeding cars to slow. The story says he appears only at dusk or at night, with a faint red light flickering through the mist along the straight.

No confirmed record has been found that any such policeman was killed on the road, and nothing in official archives gives his name. The tale persists in oral tradition and ghost-story threads, often shared by drivers who say they felt compelled to brake at that spot.
