The site of the Banbridge workhouse, now occupied by the Banbridge Health and Care Centre, has a reputation for ghostly sightings. Locals have described an apparition of a man walking along the perimeter fence who vanishes without warning. In another account two figures were seen crossing the road near the old hospital and disappeared before reaching the far side.
The workhouse was set up in 1841 under the Poor Law and sheltered destitute people through the Famine years. It became Banbridge District Hospital in 1932. Some people think the figures are former inmates or patients, though the account does not say who saw them or when.
