On the stretch of the A26 between Laurencetown and Seapatrick, drivers have long kept a wary eye on the roadside after dark. The best-known account dates to the 1960s. At about one in the morning a woman identified only as Mrs. Evans was driving home to Banbridge from a dance at Tullylish Hall. Near an old mill she found herself behind what looked like a funeral procession: a tall man walking solemnly in front of a hearse drawn by two black horses.
She had to slow to walking pace and followed it for about a hundred yards. Then the whole cortege turned sharply to the right and vanished. When she reached the spot she found no gate, lane or gap, only a high fence and dense hedge, so a real funeral could not have left the road there. When she told the story she learned that other drivers had seen the same thing on the same stretch.
