Lady Maude at Bangor Castle

Bangor Castle, Bangor

Reports since 1941

Bangor Castle, in Bangor on Belfast Lough, was the last home of a Lady Maude, who died in 1941. She is said never to have left. She enjoyed visiting the staff dining room because she loved listening to gossip, and it is around that area that people claim to have seen her ghost. Over the years, members of staff have felt uncomfortable there, feeling a hand on their arm or a cool breeze pass in the corridors.

Other stories speak of the presence of soldiers. That may relate to the Second World War, when the castle was used as a temporary hospital with Nissen huts put up in the forecourt. Rumours spread round Bangor that prisoners of war were kept in the basement tunnel area; they were not, but the stories fed the talk of ghosts in the grounds.

The castle is the council's civic building; the grounds are a public park.
