He had let his three Border terriers out at night when he saw a huge pair of orange eyes at the edge of the floodlighting, and the dogs fled indoors. From about 20 yards away he saw a panther-like animal that gave a low, snarling growl and sprang into the fields. He told the paper he had no doubt it was a puma or something similar. The Independent noted in April 1997 that no creature was ever found.
