The Fairy Sweetheart at Gylen Castle, Kerrera

Gylen Castle, Kerrera

Recorded 1860s and 1900

Gaolin is the Gaelic form of Gylen. On being detected the Elle woman ran into the sea from the point since called Rutha na Sirich. John Gregorson Campbell observes that the names Brian Brugh in the Macphie tale and Brian Mac Braodh here suggest the two stories once had more in common.

The castle was a MacDougall stronghold, burned in 1647. The note is brief, so the confidence is traditional rather than documented.
