The Crowd on Poolewe Bridge

Poolewe bridge, Poolewe

2 to 3 October 1860

His family said nobody was there and the house faced the bridge less than thirty yards off, so a crowd could not have gathered unseen. He said he had pushed through them and felt frightened. He died shortly afterwards.

Next day an extreme west-north-west hurricane struck while open boats were setting herring nets at the head of Loch Ewe, lifting boats from the water. About twenty boats ran into the pool under Poolewe bridge and a multitude of relatives crowded the bridge to watch. Several men drowned and were buried at Inverewe, where a gravestone records the date. The vision was understood as having been fulfilled.
