The Prophecy of the Last Macleod of Raasay

Isle of Raasay

Attributed to the 1600s; fulfilled before 1877

Ruiga is a place in Skye. Mackenzie says that when the last Macleod of Raasay had an heir, an old sage in the district called on his neighbour with great sorrow and said the birth was a sure sign the house would end. Such a birth was normally an occasion for joy among the retainers.

He adds that the chief lost the ancient inheritance and behaved in a way that justified the prediction, and that the other lairds, with the marks foretold, were his contemporaries. The Kintail man who repeated it told it in the same words, and an old Raasay man who remembered seven proprietors lamented its fulfilment.

Raasay is reached by ferry from Sconser; the prophecy is not tied to a place.
