The Fairy Cows from the Sea at Scorrybreck

MacNicol's Big Rock, Scorrybreck, Portree

Told before 1900

At Scorrybreck they were kept from returning by tossing earth between them and the sea, and burying-ground earth was thought most effective. On the evening they came ashore a voice was heard from the sea calling them by name in a rhyme, naming cows of different colours, black, brown, brindled, red and white-faced.

Campbell thinks it more probable that the superiority of certain stock was the origin of the idea of fairy cattle, rather than the reverse.
