The White Lady and the Well at Kilwaughter Castle

Kilwaughter Castle, near Larne

Traditional

Kilwaughter Castle is a ruined tower house southwest of Larne, built in the seventeenth century by the Agnew family on land from King James VI.

Tradition says a phantom white lady, a member of the Agnew family who died three centuries ago, appears on the battlements or the tower. A well on the grounds was said to have magical properties. If the water drawn from it bubbled, good fortune would follow, but if the water was still, a family member would soon die.

The well is a form of death omen found in the lore of several Irish and Scottish families.

A ruin on private land.
