The Disturbances at Pollock's Jewellers, Larne

Pollock Jewellers, Main Street, Larne

November 1992

Pollock's Jewellers was one of Larne's oldest businesses, with roots on Cross Street from 1890 and a Main Street shop from 1937. In 1979 it passed to Anne and John Sproule, who ran it until it closed in 2021.

In November 1992 Anne arrived to open up and found her handbag missing from the back room, then found it on a shelf above the counter. Jewellery left for repair or engraving disappeared from the out tray and reappeared days later in odd places. Her son David, who worked as an engraver in the back room, was struck by boxes thrown from the shelves in front of him. Knocking and banging began on the walls of the back room, often as customers were in the shop.

The family asked for help from Canon William Lendrum, a Church of Ireland minister known locally for his work with reportedly haunted properties. He held a Eucharist in the back room. Those present described the atmosphere as unusually cold and the disturbance as intensifying before it stopped for good. Lendrum wrote about the case in Confronting the Paranormal: A Christian Perspective, and reportedly described the presence as resembling a farm labourer in old-fashioned dress. No further activity has been reported.
